Where: Monument
Street, EC2
What: The
monument, a fluted doric column, was erected by Sir Christopher
Wren in the year
1677 to commemorate the Great Fire of London of 1666, and the rebuilding
of London under King Charles II.
The monument
stands 202 feet tall (66 metres), which is the distance to the
house in Pudding
Lane
where the fire broke out. It is the tallest free standing
stone column in the world.
You can walk
the seemingly never ending spiral stair case ton the top. The
view once you get there repays the climb, all 311 steps of it.
