Where: 21
New Globe Walk, Bankside, SE1 9DT
What:
The
original Globe Theatre, where many of Shakespeare's works were
originally performed to packed houses, burned down in 1613
during a performance
of Hamlet. An accurate replica of the oringinal globe was
recently rebuilt on the same site.
Faithful
to the original in
style
and
dimensions, productions
mimic those of the late 16th century. Throughout
the year various of Shakespeare's plays are performed at the
Globe, often with the actors clothing, music, dance and settings
as close as possible to have they would have been at the Globe
of 1599 without modern
trappings. So, for example, you can stand in the Yard with
no roof and get wet if it
rains.
The guided
tour of the theatre is informative and filled with
fascinating
stories.
An excellent
restaurant
on
the
premises makes this the ideal place to spend an afternoon
or evening.
