Where: Portobello
Road, W11
What:
Portobello
Road
is lively market with lots of stalls dealing in antiques, Victoriana and pseudo-antiques.
It claims to be ' the
world's largest antiques market'; on a market day (Saturday) there
are
over
1,500
dealers
selling
every kind of antique and collectable.
The road itself
is a narrow, winding thoroughfare in the middle of Notting Hill.
The shops and stalls of Portobello Road offer an extraordinary
variety of goods ranging in price from a few pounds to several
thousands.
A market has
been held here since 1837, and today
it is really three or four markets rolled into one. At
the Notting Hill end there are stalls selling antiques, jewellery,
paintings, coins, medals, silverware and collectables.
This area also has cafés, bars, restaurants and
delicatessens.
Further down
the hill are fruit and vegetable stalls. The section around Westbourne
Park Road and Talbot Road was made famous in
the film 'Notting Hill' , where Hugh had his book shop.
Under the
Westway is a large flea market offering second-hand clothes,
jewellery,
records and books, and beyond this at Golborne
Road the market becomes rundown but it's still worth searching
for bargains.
All of the
stall holders here are experts so don't expect to find too many
bargains. The
market is always very crowded by mid morning, so to enjoy it,
the best bet is to
get there early. Some stalls are open by 05:30, the market
is in full swing by 08:00 and crowded so that you can't move
by
10:30.
Nearest
underground station: Ladbroke
Grove, Westbourne Grove or Notting Hill Gate
Opening
times: The market is open every Saturday from 08:00.
While the shops are open six days a week, it's not a patch on
the market days. If you are going to go, go on a Saturday.
