Where: Great
Newport Street, WC2 (off Charing Cross Road)
What:
The
photographers gallery in london displays a changing programme
of exhibitions by living photographers, plus pictures from
the past, a bookshop and print sales.
The photographers
gallery was the first independent gallery in Britain devoted
to photography, founded in 1971 at Great Newport
Street, WC2. Since then the gallery
has developed a reputation as this country's primary venue for
contemporary
photography and one of the
city's finest
independent galleries.
Based in 2
buildings on the same street, the photographers gallery offers
an integrated programme of exhibitions and educational events.
These exhibitions
sometimes straddle both locations, but more often present complimentary
or even opposing shows.
With
a shop stocking all manner of books and magazines on photographic
theory / technique, a small gallery offering print sales plus
a great cafe, the gallery makes for a rewarding
visit if you're
in
the neighbourhood (the
national
portrait gallery
and the national
gallery are
around the corner, so you might just be).
