Where: Broadway,
SW1
What: The
headquarters of the Metropolitan Police, famous for the revolving
three sided sign that forms the backdrop for many news reports.
Why the name
'new scotland yard' when it is the home of london's police force?
When the metropolitan police force was first established in
1829, it
was based at 4 Whitehall Place. This building
opened on to a
courtyard which had been the
site of a residence
owned by the Kings of Scotland, known as "Scotland Yard".
The headquarters
was moved in 1890 to premises on the Victoria Embankment, which
became known as "New Scotland Yard." Then, in 1967,
a further move took place to a larger, modern and rather uninspiring
headquarters near St James's Park, which is also known as "New
Scotland Yard".
Other than
the sign, there is not much to see.
It is
the home of the Crime Museum. Unfortunately, this is a private
museum, it is not open to the general
public and is only open to police officers by prior appointment.
Nearest
underground station: St.
James’s Park
Admission: open
to police officers only, by prior appointment.
