What:
This
hard-hitting docudrama transfers from a successful and critically
acclaimed run at the Tricycle theatre.
Guantanamo
blends personal stories with legal opinion and political
debate in examining the detention of over 650 individuals
since 2002 at
the US naval base in Cuba. The US government
refuses to term the Guantanamo Bay detainees prisoners of
war or claim they are criminals awaiting trial. They can receive
no protection from either the Geneva Convention or from the
US criminal justice system; they are in a state of limbo,
neither
one thing nor the other. They are officially held on the
grounds of 'national security', a situation decried by legal
experts
the world over for its lack of due process.
Guantanamo
- 'Honor Bound To Defend Freedom' explores the questions surrounding
the detention centre and asks how much damage it,
and the war on terror, is doing to western democratic values.
