What: The
elegant buildings of Horse Guards were designed by William Kent
and completed in 1755. The
Household Cavalry mounts the guard here (two mounted
guardsmen are on sentry duty) from 10 am - 4 pm daily.
The Changing
of the Guard takes place everyday, when the Household Cavalry
rides from Hyde Park, via The Mall, to Whitehall for the
11 am changeover (Sundays 10 am). There is also a dismount ceremony
daily at 4 pm (see changing
of the guard).
Horse Guards
Parade is London's largest single open space. Built in 1745
to house the old palace guards, the Trooping
the Colour, a magnificent military ceremony, takes place there
on the Queen’s official
birthday (June 6th).
