london horse guards

Where: Whitehall, SW1

What: The elegant buildings of Horse Guards were designed by William Kent and completed in 1755. The Household Cavalry mounts the guard here (two mounted guardsmen are on sentry duty) from 10 am - 4 pm daily.

The Changing of the Guard takes place everyday, when the Household Cavalry rides from Hyde Park, via The Mall, to Whitehall for the 11 am changeover (Sundays 10 am). There is also a dismount ceremony daily at 4 pm (see changing of the guard).

Horse Guards Parade is London's largest single open space. Built in 1745 to house the old palace guards, the Trooping the Colour, a magnificent military ceremony, takes place there on the Queen’s official birthday (June 6th).

Nearest underground station: Charing Cross
