What: Housed
in Almshouses erected in 1715 by the Ironmongers’ Company,
the geffrye museum is one of London’s hidden treasures and best-loved
museums. Via
a series of period rooms, it
shows the changing style of the English domestic interior from
1600 to the present
day.
The
rooms show the changing style of English middle-class
living rooms from the 16th century right through to today.
Each room contains furniture, domestic equipment and musical
instruments that you would expect to see in a
middle class home during that period.
The herb garden
and period garden rooms are open from 1 April to 31 October during
museum hours.
The almshouse
is open on the first Saturday of the month. Admission is by
timed entry at 11.00am, 12.00pm, 2.00pm, 3.00pm and 4.00pm
and tickets
are £2.00
for adults with free admission for children under 16. Limited visits are possible during the week on alternate Wednesdays
for groups which have pre-booked.
