Place (just off The Mall), SW1
What: The
duke of yorks column, which stands above the steps leading
to St. James’s Park,
is 124 feet high, and was erected in 1833 as a memorial
to Frederick, Duke of York, the second son of George Ill.
Although
an able and devoted Army administrator as Commander-in-Chief,
he was less successful in the field. According to popular song
this 'grand old duke of york, he had 10,000 men, he marched them
up to the top of the hill and he marched them down again'.
The
column was
funded
by
docking a days pay
from
everyone
in
the
army. As the Duke was very popular, they didn't seem to mind.
