What: The
old masters is a play is set in 1937. Bernard Berenson,
a renowned art
critic, connoisseur, writer, and collector, is discussing art
and world affairs with his wife Mary and his
mistress Nicky in the gardens of his opulent villa
overlooking Florence.
Meanwhile,
unknown to Berenson, in a hotel in Florence multimillionaire
Joseph
Duveen, the world's pre-eminent art dealer,
is preparing to visit him late that night with a priceless
Renaissance painting. Duveen knows that this visit may shatter
their 30 year-old, highly secret, business arrangement.
This
play offers an insight into the fascinating world of the market
in fine art via the real life
relationship between Duveen and Berenson. From the author Simon Gray and the director Harold Pinter, the
cast for this short run includes Edward Fox, Peter Bowles,
Barbara Jefford, Sally Dexte and Steven Pacey.
