Glyndebourne Opera

Where: Glyndebourne, Lewes, East Sussex, BN8 5UU (between London and Brighton).

What: The Glyndebourne Opera is one of the world's best-known opera houses, set in the grounds 'Glyndebourne', a magnificent country house in the peaceful countryside of Sussex, between London and Brighton.

The tradition of summer opera at Glyndebourne started in 1934, and continues today in a 1200 seat opera house which opened 60 years later, in May 1994.

Nearest station: certain trains from London Victoria to Brighton stop at Lewes station (there are bus connections from Lewes station to Glyndebourne)

Opening times: there are regular performances every summer. For dates and performances, see the website below. Performances typically start in late afternoon

Note: during the Festival season, evening dress (black tie / long or short dress) is the customary dress code.

Admission prices : (2005) ticket prices depend on the performance, but tend to be on the expensive side. For the 2005 festival tickets are from £85, £130 and £155

Hotels in Lewes: Superbreak offer a small number of hotels in or near Lewes and a wider selection in Brighton, Eastbourne or back closer to London near Gatwick airport.
